Objective<\/strong>
\nMarina environments, and especially ports due to the concentration of loading, unloading and storage activities that take place there, are particularly susceptible to pollution from rainwater runoff, which can carry contaminants such as sediments, waste and chemicals into the sea. These pollutants, derived from industrial activities, logistics operations and impermeable surfaces, pose a threat to marine ecosystems and require rigorous technical attention.<\/p>\n

The low turnover of these waters increases the concentration of this pollution, which can have a significant impact on the marine ecosystem. To manage this impact, it is crucial to implement good environmental practices that minimise pollution and protect the aquatic ecosystem, as well as rainwater treatment systems.<\/p>\n

Urban and industrial wastewater discharges from land into the sea are the main source of pollution entering the marine environment. The treatment and control of these discharges is essential to reduce the pressure on coastal water bodies, in order to guarantee the maintenance of their ecological quality, thus protecting marine plant and animal species and ensuring the protection of human health. For the Canary Islands, this is a priority issue, as seawater is the second source of drinking water for human consumption and the main economic activity is associated with coastal tourism.<\/p>\n

The management and proper treatment of wastewater discharges into the sea must be carried out in line with the provisions of the sectoral policy itself, such as the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000\/60\/EC and its derivatives regulating acceptable levels of pollutants in surface water bodies), the Bathing Water Quality Directive (Directive 2006\/7\/EC), the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008\/56\/EC and Directive 2017\/845) and, in the case of urban wastewater discharges, the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (Directive 91\/271\/EEC and its recent proposed revision).<\/p>\n

That is why the ITC’s Water Department, within the framework of the Innovablue project: Sustainable digital growth of blue tourism in Atlantic territories (MAC\/1\/1. 3\/0069), associated with objective 1 of accelerating the adoption of innovative solutions in environmental management in the nautical sector of the Atlantic islands, is organising this conference, which will serve as a meeting point and forum for technical discussion between the various administrations and companies in the sector, with a view to improving the management of such discharges and the preservation of the marine environment.<\/p>\n
