The Canary Islands Federation of Port Companies (FEDEPORT), in collaboration with the Port Authority of Las Palmas, the Las Palmas Ports Foundation, the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster and PROEXCA, is organising the 1st Sustainability Conference at the Port of Las Palmas on Friday 15 May 2026. This professional event, which will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Las Palmas Port Authority between 09:00 and 13:30, has been created with the aim of establishing a forum for debate and action on sustainable development within the Canary Islands’ maritime ecosystem.
The official opening will feature the participation of Beatriz Calzada, President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas; Octavio Caraballo, Deputy Minister of the Office of the President of the Canary Islands Government; Luis Padilla, Director-General for Relations with Africa of the Canary Islands Government; Betsabé Morales, Manager of the Las Palmas Ports Foundation; and José Juan Socas Álamo, President of FEDEPORT.
The technical programme will begin with a session dedicated to the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During this session, there will be an in-depth look at the leadership of the 2030 Agenda as applied to the port sector, and business success stories, such as that of Boluda y Suárez, will be presented to demonstrate how sustainability translates into a real competitive advantage. Furthermore, Mary Nieves Hernández, Head of Occupational Health and Safety at the Port Authority of Las Palmas, will explain the transition from strategy to action in the day-to-day management of the docks.
Subsequently, the conference will address the circular economy as applied to the port environment, focusing specifically on water and waste management. Industry experts, including Ignacio Gallego, Harbour Master of Las Palmas, and Víctor Trujillo, will analyse the current regulatory framework and the model for transforming waste into a resource. This session will be rounded off by a presentation from Óscar Bergasa on environmental monitoring systems applied to the maritime-port environment.
The final part of the event will focus on Port Sustainability in the International Context, analysing opportunities for cooperation between the Canary Islands and West Africa. The debate will feature Santiago Yanes, Head of Innovation at the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Hassana Mbeirick,
representative of the Mauritanian Green Hydrogen Association, who, together with Luis Padilla, will explore sustainable development in the Atlantic region.
FEDEPORT invites all professionals, member companies and industry stakeholders to take part in this essential event to strengthen the competitiveness and environmental responsibility of the Port of Las Palmas.
