Casa África is delighted to present its 11th Film Festival, an event open to the public that showcases the voices of African audiovisual storytellers and their diaspora with the aim of raising awareness of Africa and its people from their own perspective, moving away from the stereotypes promoted by the mass media
In this edition, we will continue to focus on the documentary, fiction and drama genres as tools for raising awareness and social transformation
with current works made in Ethiopia, Cameroon, Mauritius, DR Congo, Mauritania and Somalia. We will address different themes, all of which are part of Casa África’s Action Plan: migration, sustainable development, social rights, human rights and climate change.
The Casa África Film Festival offers the chance to get closer to the everyday reality of Africa. It is an opportunity to travel without
leaving your armchair and learn about cultures that seem distant to us, but are not so far away after all.
The 11th Casa África Film Festival is organised in collaboration with the Cinenómada – FCAT programme and will take place from 7 to 9 October 2025 at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology (Parque de Santa Catalina. 35007 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).
As always, admission is free. Limited seating.
PROGRAMME
Tuesday, 7 October. 6 p.m.
Alazar, by Beza Hailu Lemma
(fiction, Canada, Ethiopia, France, 2024, 36’) In contemporary Ethiopia, the exodus of an agricultural community is disrupted when the patriarch of a
prominent family disappears from his grave. Tessema, his son, begins to question the church’s divine explanation, forcing him to launch his own investigation.
Les voyageurs, by David Bingong
(documentary Cameroon, Spain, 2025, 60′) On the border between Morocco and Spain, a group of travellers eagerly await crossing into Europe. One failed attempt after another, they survive while the “director” must keep the flame of hope alive for the whole group. Les voyageurs, woven together with a camera and a couple of songs, resonates as a powerful gesture of resilience.
Wednesday 8 October. 6pm
Pie Dan Lo, by Kim Yip Tong
(animation, France, Réunion, Mauritius, 2024, 14′) On 25 July 2020, the cargo ship MV Wakashio ran aground on the reef off the east coast of Mauritius. Twelve days later, oil spilled, causing the worst ecological disaster ever in the region.
L’arbre de l’authenticité, by Sammy Baloji
(documentary, Belgium, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2025, 89 min.)
In the heart of Africa’s largest rainforest lies one of the world’s largest tropical agricultural research centres. Located on the banks of the Congo River, the INERA research station in Yangambi was a thriving scientific centre in its heyday. Today, it is an amalgam of jungle and ruins, where questions of knowledge, power over knowledge and access to knowledge persist. Its vestiges reveal the weight of the colonial past and its inextricable links to climate change.
Thursday 9 October. 6pm
The Father, Probably, by Sidi Mohamed and Tayib Tolba
(fiction, Mauritania, 2024, 28′) We don’t know much about our girl. We don’t even know her name. She is involved in an accident that is not confirmed by witnesses. Therefore, her parents, especially her father, deal with the situation in a more flexible way than the girl expects.
The Village Next to Paradise, by Mo Harawe
(fiction, Germany, Austria, France, Somalia, 2024, 132 min.) A small village in the hot and windy Somali desert. Mamargade, a single father, takes on multiple odd jobs to give his son Cigaal a better life. His sister Awaweelo, who has just divorced, returns to live with them. Despite the changing winds in a country ravaged by civil war and natural disasters, love, trust and resilience will enable the protagonists to take control of their destiny.
