The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands and the company Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental S.A. (GESPLAN), is organising a workshop on CO₂ and Ocean Acidification, as part of the PLANCLIMAC2 Project (1/MAC/2/2. 4/0006) of the INTERREG VI-D Madeira-Azores-Canary Islands (MAC) Territorial Cooperation Programme 2021-2027, under Priority 2 – MAC GREEN, aimed at ecological transition, promoting a green and blue economy, combating climate change and preventing and managing risks and disasters.
The workshop will be held at the Marine Climate Change Observatory, located in Fuencaliente (La Palma), taking advantage of this unique enclave as a natural laboratory for ocean acidification, caused by coastal emissions in the area and their environmental consequences.
The main objective of the Workshop on CO₂ and Ocean Acidification is to analyse the impact of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions on ocean chemistry from a comprehensive perspective, considering the physical, chemical, biological and geological processes that take place in the ocean, as well as their interactions.
Special attention will be paid to the Canary Islands and Macaronesian region, addressing processes at different scales and taking into account the oceanographic and environmental particularities of these territories.
