The workshop will present a methodology for analysing the vulnerability of urban water cycle infrastructure to climate change, as well as regionalised climate projections and the risk of flooding and sea-level rise along coastlines.
This session will involve a practical case study applying the vulnerability analysis methodology to a typical urban water cycle infrastructure. Participants will work in groups, with technical support from the trainer, to identify the climate-related risks to the infrastructure using maps and climate projection data, and to propose adaptation measures.
Session objectives
1. To present the methodology for analysing the vulnerability of urban water cycle infrastructure to climate change, as well as how it has been applied in the Canary Islands.
2. To understand the potential for applying the methodology in the Autonomous Region of Madeira through a case study.
3. To present and analyse regionalised climate projections and their use in applying the vulnerability analysis methodology.
4. To apply practical tools for assessing climate risks.
5. To facilitate the exchange of experiences and evaluate adaptation measures.
Target audience: local technical staff, water managers, infrastructure managers, public institutions.
Methodology
• Short presentations to contextualise concepts and climate data.
• Practical workshops in small groups using maps and climate projections.
• Guided discussion and comments from the facilitators.
• Integration of the results into risk matrices and adaptation plans.
Programme:
9:00 Welcome – Opening of the workshop. Brief icebreaker activity for participants.
09:10 Introduction and objectives – Overview of the ADAPTaRES WATER 2 CAP project. Workshop objectives and programme for the day.
9:30 Vulnerability analysis methodology: presentation of the Guide to the Vulnerability Analysis of Urban Water Cycle Infrastructure in the Face of Climate Change.
10:15 Introduction to regionalised climate projections (online): explanation of the types of climate projections (temperature, precipitation), spatial scales and RCP/SSP scenarios. Use of available data and climate visualisation tools.
10.40 Flood and coastal overtopping risk (online) — Analysis of flood and coastal overtopping risk on the southern coast of Madeira associated with rising mean sea level.
11:00 Coffee break
11:30 Practical exercise: analysis of climate projections – Group work in which participants use maps and climate projection data to identify local climate risks in a typical water cycle infrastructure.
13:00 Lunch
14:30 Risk assessment and prioritisation: application of risk matrices taking into account projected climate impacts and local vulnerabilities. Discussion on adaptation measures.
15:15 Indicators: analysis of indicators of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity.
16:00 Results and closing session: presentation by the groups of the case study results. Summary of key takeaways and a quick evaluation of the workshop.
The workshop is free of charge and has a limited number of places, so prior registration is required via the following link: here
