SIGNING OF THE FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION AGREEMENT FROM THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION INSTRUMENT (NDICI) TO THE INTERREG MAC PROGRAMME

On 30 September 2025, a signing ceremony was held in Brussels for the €10 million financial contribution agreement from the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) to the Interreg MAC programme.

The signature by high-level representatives from the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission, Director-General Themis Christophidou, and the Canary Islands Government, Regional Minister for Finance and Relations with the EU, Matilde Asian González, demonstrated the commitment of both parties to work together in addressing common challenges such as ecological transition, migration, natural disaster mitigation, and the development of the green and blue economies.

As stated in the European Commission article, the Interreg MAC programme has consolidated itself over the last decades as the main instrument for promoting the regional integration and cooperation between the ORs and their neighbouring countries in West Africa.

PRESENTATION OF INTERREG MAC PROJECTS IN CAPE VERDE

On 10 and 11 September 2025, a seminar for the presentation of the projects approved in the first call for proposals of the Interreg MAC (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands) territorial cooperation programme was held in the city of Praia, Cape Verde. The projects are now at the end of their first year of implementation.

The conference was held within the framework of the ATLANTE strategic project, a project to support the governance of the Interreg MAC Programme, one of whose objectives is to boost cooperation between European and African entities in the cooperation area.

Within this framework, the purpose of this conference is to promote the visibility of the Interreg MAC projects approved in the African partner countries, facilitate networking between entities, and seek synergies between projects.

The conference, aimed at presenting the 28 projects approved with partners from Cape Verde within the framework of the 1st call for proposals, was organised in collaboration with the Cape Verdean Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and was attended by the Managing Authority of the Interreg MAC programme,  senior officials from the Regional Governments of Madeira, Azores and the Canary Islands, European and Cape Verdean partners in the projects, representatives of the European Union, the Embassies of Portugal and Spain, multilateral organisations and other key players involved in the areas of action of the Interreg MAC 2021-2027 programme.


16 PROJECTS APPROVED BY THE STEERING COMMITTEE UNDER THE 2nd CALL (CAPITALISATION) OF THE INTERREG MAC PROGRAMME 2021-2027

On 18 August 2025, the Steering Committee of the INTERREG Madeira-Azores-Canary Islands (MAC) Programme 2021-2027 adopted the decisions to approve the projects submitted to the CAPITALISATION Call, which were ratified by the Monitoring Committee on 3 September 2025.

The evaluation was carried out jointly by external capitalisation experts, responsibles from the regional governments of Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands, representatives of African third countries and the Joint Secretariat.

Of the 19 projects submitted to the 2nd phase of the capitalisation call, a total of 16 projects have been approved, with 2 projects remaining on the reserve list and 1 project not approved.

The Lead Partners of the projects will shortly receive communications regarding the decisions taken.

    framework of the Programme. The complaints regulated in this document include any
    dispute that ERDF applicants or beneficiaries may raise in relation to acts, agreements
    or decisions adopted by the Programme Authorities and bodies in relation to project
    proposals submitted and the management and control of approved projects.

  • Binding consultations: Consultations that may be of general interest, mainly related to
    the eligibility of expenses, which are not expressly included in other programme

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE IVY PROGRAMME (INTERREG VOLUNTEER YOUTH)

We are pleased to inform you that the Interreg Volunteer Youth_IVY initiative has been officially extended until 31 December 2027.

IVY is a European Commission initiative that aims to promote cooperation by achieving the following three goals:

  1. Support cooperation - Supporting cooperation projects thanks to the involvement of motivated young people.
  2. Make cooperation visible - Making the benefits of cooperation more visible among local communities and beyond.
  3. Empower youth - Empowering young people to engage in cooperation.

Each volunteering experience lasts from 2 to 6 months and volunteers receive a financial contribution that covers their cost of living. The IVY initiative is financed by the European Union and the Association of European Border Regions.

Through IVY, selected young people participate as volunteers in Interreg programmes and projects, contributing to building a strong and united Europe in the regions where they are active.

Citizens Energy Package: Commission starts consultation process

The European Commission has launched an open public consultation on the upcoming package of measures on energy for citizens aimed at accelerating the transition towards cleaner energy sources, addressing energy poverty and ensuring a just transition in which all citizens are able to be actively involved and fully protected.

The consultation is aimed at consumer organisations, regulators, industry representatives, local and regional administrations, and especially individual citizens.

The consultation will remain open until 11 September 2025.

EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy: Open public consultation

The European Commission is seeking citizens’, travellers’, and tourism operators’ views on the upcoming EU sustainable tourism strategy. This strategy will make tourism more sustainable, competitive, and innovative, while enhancing the overall experience for travellers and supporting the sector’s resilience in the face of emerging challenges, such as the impacts of climate change, geopolitical tensions.

The consultation is open to all citizens and stakeholders who would like to share their views on the future of EU tourism.

The consultation will remain open until 12 September 2025.

PRESENTATION OF INTERREG MAC PROJECTS IN GHANA

On 24 June 2025, the presentation of the projects approved in the 1st Interreg MAC (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands) call for proposals was held in Accra, Ghana.

The event took place within the framework of the ATLANTE strategic project, a project supporting the governance of the Interreg MAC Programme, which aims to boost cooperation between European and African entities in the cooperation area.

Within this framework, the purpose of this event is to promote the visibility of MAC projects approved in African partner countries, facilitate networking between entities, and seek synergies between projects.

The conference, aimed at presenting the 20 projects approved with partners from Ghana, was organised in collaboration with the Ghanaian Ministry of Finance and was attended by the various ministries responsible for the MAC 2021-2027 action areas, as well as the European and Ghanaian partners of the projects, representatives of the European Union, the Spanish Embassy, multilateral organisations and other key players.


Interreg promotes the circular economy in Europe with cooperative solutions

On 11 June, the online seminar ‘Circular Solutions powered by Cooperation: Interreg's Role in Building a Competitive and Sustainable Europe’ will be held as part of EU Green Week. This session will address how cooperation between European territories contributes to a cleaner, more innovative and circular economy.

During the event, experts, representatives of the European Commission and Interreg programme managers will discuss the current regulatory framework, present real-life cases and propose ways to strengthen the impact of cross-border cooperation.

NEW SOCIAL MEDIA PROCEDURES MANUAL NOW AVAILABLE

A short manual on social media procedures for all projects, beneficiaries and collaborators of the programme is now available in the Documentation section of this website, under Communication.

Its aim is to establish simple and effective guidelines that will enable:

  • Raise awareness of the Interreg MAC programme and each of the projects that comprise it.
  • Create a solid network of digital collaboration between all stakeholders.
  • Facilitate the monitoring of the main activities carried out and results obtained.

The Portuguese version of the Interreg MAC Communication Manual is also available.
